Distressingly young Missouri sibling-based punk three-piece Radkey are playing their first UK headline show tonight at the Barfly in London. It should be fucking bonkers. We asked Isaiah (centre) what the deal was, and why people should come along.
What’s the Radkey story so far?
Well, we were at the premiere of Toy Story 3, and Dee gets this text from a chick in a cover band who needs someone to fill in on the bass. I have a bass, and Dee’s not really a musician but says he’s gonna do it, so I lend him my bass but I want him to fail. I don’t want him to do good. It’s my bass so no way. But he did good, which was awesome for him, but I wasn’t happy, so I said “Let’s start a band”. I never want to be the guy where a girl will want to get to know me just to get to my brother, you know? So we started a band, and said we’d practice every day or no Christmas presents. That was a pact. So we started jamming every day, writing songs and doing stuff, and here we are.
And Download was your first UK show?
Yeah, it was amazing. Our first show in the US was packed out too. Not every one has been, but that one was…
Why should people come to the Barfly tonight to see you?
People should hear loud guitars, they should sweat and hurt each other, and hear original, loud, new music. They should do it. Everyone should.
Any specific types of sweating and hurting?
Sticky sweat, sharp pains, pains you never felt before, pain that’s good but still painful, and some pains that you don’t even notice at the time and only really kick in later.
