ALPINESTARS SPRING SUMMER 2013

For their SS13 collection the Italian motorsports brand Alpinestars’ gives a nod to its American home from home, with a line of sportswear-based baseball and basketball inspired product.

Even though the brand’s original headquarters and main research and development facility remain in Northern Italy, Alpinestars have a well-established Los Angeles office, and with a design team based in California it’s no surprise that their all-American styling has a direct influence on pieces in the brand’s casualwear collection.

Drawing upon their strong motorsports heritage, the star shaped Blaze logo is a prominent feature of the Split Decision and Throne tanks, whilst the bold Slauson tee has the brand’s birth year (the number 63) emblazoned across the front of the two-tone t-shirt in a font that emulates classic American football jerseys.

“I CLEANED BEER OFF THE STAGE THEN SQUEEZED THE RAG INTO MY MOUTH” – A CHAT WITH CHANTAL CLARET

Former Morningwood songstress, and wife of Mindless Self Indulgence’s Jimmy Urine, Chantal Claret is about to release her debut album The One, The Only… in the UK. We had a quick chat about the record, her performances and losing her shit on stage.

You’re about to release your debut album The One, The Only… in the UK. What can you tell us about it?
It’s a romping good time of upbeat 60s inspired tunes that deal with love, sex and death, which are some of my favorite subjects. It has a hip-hop bass to make your booty shake and songs that make women dance. I like to call it punk rock soul and it was a pleasure to make and even more of a pleasure to perform.

Why the delay in getting it released in the UK?
I’ve never officially released anything in the UK – even with my old band – and originally my deal was just for America, but I was so hot to trot to release music in the UK because that has always been my fantasy, I am such an anglophile and I am so inspired by the British invasion, britpop and trip-hop that the idea of this music not coming out in the UK seemed to be a travesty.

It’s a whole new direction for you in terms of genre, what influenced this?
I can’t possibly narrow it down to one influence, the whole genre of retro music inspires me. Everything from girl groups to classic soul and James Brown, Tina Turner, The Ronettes, The Shirelles, The Exciters, Ellie Greenwich, The Cramps, Spencer Davis, I could go on for days. Anyone with a little grit to their voice and danger in their performance. When you’re a kid you generally gravitate towards a style of music and for me that was the 60s, I couldn’t get enough of it. It’s what I listen to at home and it’s what I sing in the shower. Check it out… »

STÜSSY X PROGRESSIVE ERA LIMITED TEE

Back in FRONT 176 we told you all to listen to Joey Bada$$ and his Pro Era crew cos they’re awesome.

In December 2012 to mark the release of the The aPROcalypse mix tape, Stüssy joined together with the crew in creating a limited tee and holding a meet-and-greet event at their NYC Chapter store with Joey BadA$$ and the Pro Era collective.

They’ve continued this with the release of a limited edition tee that you can get HERE.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM BEING IN THE SAME ROOM AS WARREN ELLIS LAST NIGHT

Comics supremo and bestselling novelist Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, The Authority, Freakangels) did a talk and a Q&A at Foyle’s bookshop yesterday to promote his new book Gun Machine. We went along, and it was ace, and we learned a lot. Here’s what we found out:

- The vast majority of people who attend a Warren Ellis event have giant beards. Pretty much the only person there not to have an enormous beard was the incredibly talented (and very pretty) Molly Crabapple.
- Warren Ellis came pretty close to being on one of the hijacked flight from 9/11. He decided to go via Chicago at the last minute instead.
- Gravel is currently being developed as a film by Legendary Pictures.
- There might be a sequel to Gun Machine – at the moment Ellis isn’t sure whether he’ll write a follow-up, but he has a few notes on how it would go if he did.
